Sertoma Speech & Hearing Foundation Receives Grant For Hearing Screenings for Children 3-7
Grant to provide Florida children ages 3-7 with no-cost hearing screenings and full evaluations of the level of hearing loss

(New Port Richey, FL) August, 2021 - Sertoma Speech & Hearing Foundation has received a grant in the amount of $2500 from the Margaret McCartney & R. Parks Williams Foundation. Sertoma's goal for this program is to provide Florida children ages 3-7 with no-cost hearing screenings and full evaluations of the level of hearing loss for those who fail the screenings. The Florida statute requiring hearing screening of every newborn is not enforced. Many babies born at smaller hospitals and birthing centers are particularly at risk. Infants and children are highly susceptible to infections and fevers that may cause hearing loss.
Diagnosis and amplification make it possible for children with hearing loss to develop personal, cognitive, and social skills at the same rate as their peers of the same age without hearing loss. We have identified children in schools who have been completely deaf in one ear. They do not realize this disability because they have no comparison to normal hearing.
With the help of Sertoma Clubs and other donors, we have a soundproof mobile clinic that is equipped for screening and evaluations. The grant will be used for supplies (e.g., disposable ear tips) and operational costs. Three additional vehicles carry audiology equipment to be set up inside previously arranged host sites.
The mission of the Sertoma Speech & Hearing Foundation of Florida is to enhance individual potential and quality of life through better hearing.
